Heavy rainfall in Afghanistan triggers devastating floods

In Afghanistan, a recent bout of heavy rainfall has unleashed devastating floods, leading to the loss of lives and extensive destruction across the nation. According to reports from TOLOnews, citing the Taliban-led State Ministry for Disaster Management Affairs, at least 14 people have lost their lives, and numerous homes have been destroyed in the wake of the deluge.

Janan Saiq, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Disaster Management Affairs, revealed the grim toll of the calamity. In 14 provinces, 140 residential dwellings have been either completely demolished or severely damaged by the floods and relentless rainfall. Additionally, over 2,000 livestock have perished, compounding the economic impact on affected communities.

“In the last three days, due to the rain, approximately 14 of our fellow citizens have died, and one person is missing. 140 homes have been either completely or partially demolished,” Saiq lamented, highlighting the severity of the situation.

 

Infrastructure Disruptions and Urgent Response

Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Works, addressed the challenges posed by the natural disaster. He informed that roads in several Afghan provinces, including Badakhshan, Takhar, Ghor, and Nuristan, have been rendered impassable due to landslides and flooding.

“Several paths in the provinces of Takhar, Badakhshan, Ghor, and Nuristan, which have been temporarily closed to traffic due to the ongoing floods and landslides, are being urgently cleared by the Ministry of Public Works,” Haqshenas affirmed, underscoring the swift response efforts underway to restore vital transportation routes.

 

Residents Bear Financial Burden and Seek Assistance

The aftermath of the floods has left many residents grappling with significant financial losses, adding to the already challenging circumstances faced by communities in Afghanistan.

Reports indicate that individuals affected by the calamity are calling on the interim government to address their concerns and provide assistance in the recovery process.

As families contend with the loss of homes, livelihoods, and beloved livestock, there is a pressing need for immediate relief measures to alleviate their suffering and facilitate the rebuilding efforts.
