Smart Cities Malaysia: Prime Minister shares aim to turn federal territories into smart cities by 2030

Smart Cities Malaysia: Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, announced plans to transform the Federal Territories into smart cities by 2030 as part of Malaysia Madani, a vision that prioritizes sustainability and green, intelligent cities. The Federal Territories Department has established a development plan for a sustainable, livable, and smart future.

Use of electric buses

Programs include the use of electric buses in Kuala Lumpur and Wangsa Maju, increased CCTV coverage in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, and the installation of WiFi in public and affordable housing in Labuan. According to the Malaysia Urban Indicators Network, the three Federal Territories achieved an “excellent sustainable” level in 2022.

Flood mitigation

The Prime Minister also highlighted the continuation of flood mitigation efforts and emphasized his confidence in the Federal Territories Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and other agencies to work together to manage and advance the progress and development of the Federal Territories.

“Excellent sustainable” level

Anwar announced that the three Federal Territories are set to achieve an “excellent sustainable” level in 2022, according to the Malaysia Urban Indicators Network (MURNInet) by the Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia). He also affirmed that flood mitigation efforts will be continued as per the established plan.

Govt. Departments to work together

He expressed confidence that the Federal Territories Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and other agencies will continue to work as a team to manage the progress and development of the Federal Territories. Anwar stated that his goal is to ensure that Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan are administered efficiently for people of diverse backgrounds to enjoy prosperity and peace.

The 2023 Federal Territory Day celebration saw the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, confer federal awards, honors, and medals to 164 recipients.
