Security Tightened in Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay Amid Threats of Attack

Security measures enhanced following warnings of potential attacks on foreign tourists.

Authorities have heightened security in Sri Lanka’s popular surfing resort, Arugam Bay, after credible reports warned of a potential attack targeting foreign tourists, particularly Israelis.

The move follows alerts from international embassies and rising tensions due to conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

According to police spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General Nihal Thalduwa, intelligence reports suggest that Israeli nationals staying in a specific building in Arugam Bay may be targeted.

The security apparatus has concentrated its efforts in the Arugam Bay and Pottuvil areas, with significant police presence to ensure safety.

500 Police and Task Force Personnel Deployed

Around 500 police officials and Special Task Force personnel have been deployed in the region to mitigate the threat.

This action was in response to a security warning issued by the US Embassy in Colombo, which urged American citizens to avoid the Arugam Bay area until further notice due to the credible threat.

Social Media Boycotts and Local Protests

Tensions have been exacerbated by anti-Israel protests organized by Sri Lanka’s Muslim minority groups, condemning the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

Calls to boycott Israeli businesses in the eastern coastal areas have also gained traction on social media platforms.

Police and Embassies Urge Vigilance

The Russian Embassy has followed the US Embassy in issuing warnings to its citizens.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police assured foreign nationals of their safety, working in coordination with intelligence agencies.

A special hotline has also been set up to allow tourists to report any suspicious activities in the area.
