Sony confirms PS5 Pro launch delay in India due to spectrum allocation issues.
The much-anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro went on sale in select markets on November 7.
However, eager Indian fans are in for disappointment, as Sony confirmed that the upgraded console will not be available in India for the foreseeable future.
The delay stems from regulatory issues surrounding the 6GHz spectrum band required for Wi-Fi 7, which has yet to be allocated in India.
Why PS5 Pro Is Not Yet in India
The PS5 Pro, a more powerful version of Sony’s popular gaming console, relies on Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be), a standard utilizing the 6GHz spectrum band to enhance wireless connectivity.
While markets such as the U.S., U.K., EU, and Japan can access the PS5 Pro, Indian gamers remain unable to enjoy its advanced features due to local telecom regulations.
“PS5 Pro will not be available in some countries (which presently includes India) where 6GHz wireless band used in IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) has not yet been allowed,” Sony stated on Friday.
This limitation highlights the ongoing struggle between technology and telecom industries over the 6GHz spectrum allocation.
6GHz Spectrum Allocation: A Point of Contention
The 6GHz spectrum has sparked debate between technology and telecom companies in India.
Tech firms advocate for its use in Wi-Fi applications, while telecom operators want the spectrum reserved for expanding 5G and future 6G services.
According to a Financial Express report, the Indian government is likely to prioritize telecom applications over Wi-Fi.
No Resolution in Sight for Indian PS5 Pro Fans
While some nations have allocated the full 6GHz band to Wi-Fi, regulatory obstacles prevent India from following suit.
The Dynamic Spectrum Alliance has appealed to the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to allow unlicensed Wi-Fi use on this band.
A Powerful Console with Advanced Features
Announced in September, the PS5 Pro boasts upgraded RDNA graphics, enhanced ray-tracing, and Sony’s AI upscaling technology, retailing at $699.99 (around Rs. 58,750).
Unfortunately, without spectrum clearance, this high-end gaming experience remains inaccessible to Indian gamers.
