Jamaat-e-Islami Announces Nationwide Strike Amidst Economic Crisis

Jamaat-e-Islami Announces Nationwide Strike on August 28

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party has declared a nationwide shutter-down strike for August 28 to press the government on economic issues. This action aims to protest against rising inflation, soaring electricity prices, and heavy taxes. JI’s Naib Emir, Liaqat Baloch, announced the strike during a press conference in Islamabad.

Government Under Pressure

Liaqat Baloch stated that the trader community’s support for the strike shows widespread dissatisfaction with the current economic policies. The strike seeks to force the government to address inflation and provide immediate relief. Baloch warned that government suppression could worsen the situation and lead to further unrest.

Baloch noted that the strike is part of JI’s ongoing efforts to hold the government accountable. The party recently held a 14-day protest in Rawalpindi, which led to negotiations with federal ministers. While the government agreed to some demands, Baloch criticized the response as inadequate.

Unfulfilled Promises

The agreement with the government included a deadline to review contracts with independent power producers (IPPs), which have contributed to high electricity bills. Baloch stressed that the government must act on this agreement promptly. He also hinted at escalating protests, potentially including a long march to Islamabad.

The upcoming strike follows a recent protest led by JI Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, who called for peaceful demonstrations with trader groups. This is part of JI’s broader movement to address economic grievances.

JI had previously postponed a 14-day sit-in after negotiations with the government. These talks resulted in a promise to reduce power tariffs and review IPP agreements. Despite these assurances, the economic situation has worsened, prompting the party to resume protests.

The August 28 strike is expected to attract significant attention and reflects growing public frustration with the government’s economic policies. Jamaat-e-Islami is committed to continuing its efforts for economic relief, even if it means intensifying protests.
