New search feature enables ChatGPT users to access past conversations effortlessly.
On Tuesday, OpenAI announced a new feature for its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which allows users to search through past chat history.
This eagerly awaited update enhances accessibility by making it quicker and easier for users to find information from previous conversations.
Available initially for paid subscribers on ChatGPT’s web platform, this feature addresses a major inconvenience, as users previously had to scroll manually to retrieve specific conversations.
Streamlining Access to Past Conversations
The new search capability introduces a magnifying glass icon on ChatGPT’s left-hand side panel. When users tap on this icon, a search bar opens, allowing them to enter keywords related to previous chats.
Additionally, a list of recent chats appears, providing a faster option to select recent conversations without typing.
This update is currently being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, with OpenAI confirming that Enterprise and Edu accounts will have access within the week. Free-tier users, however, will need to wait until next month for this feature.
Feature Limited to Web Portal for Now
While the feature is live on the ChatGPT web portal, it is unavailable on Android and iOS apps or the Windows and Mac desktop versions.
OpenAI has not indicated if or when this functionality will extend to other platforms. Nonetheless, the web-only availability for now does not diminish its appeal, particularly for business users needing quick reference capabilities.
Continual Innovation in ChatGPT
The chat history search follows another recent enhancement: a web search function that enables ChatGPT to provide current information from the internet.
Activated by a globe icon, this feature is distinct from ChatGPT’s built-in knowledge, offering curated web-based results with source references.
With these additions, OpenAI demonstrates a commitment to maintaining ChatGPT’s competitive edge in the rapidly advancing AI space.
