PM Modi meets Iranian President Pezeshkian at BRICS, discussing bilateral ties and Chabahar Port.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan.
The two leaders reviewed the state of bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, with a focus on regional connectivity and the strategic importance of the Chabahar Port.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During the meeting, PM Modi congratulated Pezeshkian on his recent election victory and welcomed Iran into the BRICS family.
This marked their first meeting since Pezeshkian took office as President of Iran in July.
PM Modi also extended an invitation to Pezeshkian to visit India, which was gladly accepted.
Chabahar Port’s Strategic Importance
A key focus of the talks was the Chabahar Port, an essential transit hub for trade between India, Afghanistan, and Central Asian nations.
Both leaders highlighted its significance in fostering economic links and aiding in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
The long-term agreement on Chabahar Port was described as a major milestone in India-Iran relations.
Regional Cooperation and Concerns
In addition to bilateral matters, the discussion covered regional developments, particularly the escalating situation in West Asia.
PM Modi expressed deep concern about the growing conflict and emphasized the need for de-escalation through diplomacy.
The two leaders agreed to continue their collaboration in multilateral platforms like BRICS and SCO to address regional issues and enhance cooperation.
Cultural Exchange and BRICS 2024
PM Modi arrived in Russia to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, marking his second visit to the country this year.
Upon his arrival, Modi was welcomed with a cultural dance performance by Russian artists at Hotel Korston in Kazan.
